Single Camera Essay

 Single Camera Essay

Introduction

This essay is all about the topic of single camera productions. I am going to talk about topics such as the camera, lighting, sound, editing and not just these. Also, how single camera productions tend to be used more in certain genres and formats and why this differs to multiple camera productions.

Camera

In a single camera production, each scene or take must be changed, so the actors cannot keep acting if the next take is of another person or subject or even if the camera changes its position, but it stays focused on the same person or object. This means that each scene could have the position of the camera, lighting and audio equipment rearranged to suit the needs of that specific shot. These factors give the director so much creative control over the production. In single camera productions the directors tend to shoot the same scene over and over again from different angles from what I have already said you can see that this is a very time-consuming process it is done to give the editors more to fall back on if something goes wrong. In our practical work we also had to make sure that the camera settings were consistent so each time that something is changed the camera settings need to be adjusted accordingly.

Lighting.

The lighting in a single camera production is usually much more sophisticated and stylized than a multi camera set up as each scene is lit to be consistent and look natural. A single camera set up also allows for the crew to be much more creative in the types of lighting that are being used, for example in the film Citizen Kane they were highly creative with the types of lighting that was used for example in one scene they hid lighting in a semi translucent celling. The film also used quite a lot of chiaroscuro lighting, for example in this scene with chiaroscuro stylized lighting.

Sound

Sound is especially important in the film industry. In film sound is used in many ways dialogue for example, dialogue is often recorded using hidden microphones to give the film a sense of realism if microphones were shown like in a news broadcast for example it would seem very unrealistic and out of place to the viewerAnother way sound is used is foley are sounds that are added in post or editing to exaggerate the effect of common sounds like walking on a certain surface for example. Another way sound is used is soundtrack music is a terrific way to give a scene a certain mood. Or even to be integrated into the scene to pull viewers into an intense fight scene for example many films do this, but a good example would be many of the fight scenes from the Star Wars films.

Editing

Single camera productions must be edited in a specific way as in theory there should not be as much footage to fall back on compared to multiple camera productions but usually directors will get around this by filming scenes multiple times giving the editors more footage to use. As the footage is taken using one camera, scenes must be separated compared to a multiple camera production where the footage is all in one take and does not need much editing, multiple camera productions all the footage in single camera productions should give the editors more work.

I think that the film again Citizen Kane is a notable example of how a single camera production was edited even though it was recorded using film it featured many interesting editing techniques for example the film used many optical illusions and special effects in the film for example they used an optical printer an optical printer was a device that was used to create special effects on film in post-production it was a technique that combined multiple elements to create a scene.

In this scene there is an interesting editing technique, many of the audience members here are fake. It is a matt black painting with holes so light passes through this is a good example of an optical illusion like I said before the light passing through makes the holes look alive and moving like real audience members.

Single Camera genres and formats.

I think that many films are single camera productions because it enables a film to be of a higher quality, for example using higher quality lighting and they are also better at stopping continuity errors as with multiple camera setups it is more difficult to hide the crew's equipment. Films that are simpler and rely on complex lighting to set the mood and tone like romance films are more likely to be single camera productions in contrast to this however films that are more complex and require stunts and action shots and more likely to be multiple camera productions although, so the editor has more footage to fall back on if something goes wrong as many scenes especially stunts only have the opportunity to be filmed once. Films can also use both multiple cameras and single camera scenes, especially in films where multiple camera scenes are a one off like I mentioned before with stunts.

Multiple camera productions tend to be used more for TV shows, for example a soap opera like EastEnders, as episodes need to be quickly made and shown every few days, they don’t have the time to be setting up complicated single camera set ups when multiple cameras are even quicker even if that does mean sacrificing quality unless it is a complicated one-off episode then single camera may be used.
